xx Different 6 cyl engines in different BL vehicles?
« Thread started on: Feb 24th, 2013, 11:56am »

I was just wondering what British Leyland vehicles had the 5.1 litre and 5.7 litre engines. As i have tractors with both and i would like to know what vehicles they originated from. Thanks.

Hi - The 5.1 & 5.7 BMC engines were fitted to a number of Birmingham & Bathgate built trucks, I don't know which models, but names like the 'F' series, Laird, & Boxer come to mind.

There was a version tilted at a 45 deg angle to produce a very low cab floor on the 'FJ' but this proved unsuccessful.

Hello, thanks for the reply, my 384 has the 5.7 litre engine and my father says and grandfather said the engine originated from a leyland bus

Haha laugh , my apolagies grin , i might email your wife and get her to ban the forum from your computer , so you wont be tempted. There was a 6cyl 1060 on ebay last week that went for 900 pound, bit rough round the edges. here is a link, dont worry it has already ended laugh

My fathers Austin has the identical 5.1 engine as my 1060 - the block casting dates them only a week apart.

Hi Cyder, Just out of interest can you tell me the block date on your fathers truck and the date on the V5 when it was first registered.

As the engine was made at Birmingham I would expect to see a good 6 months difference as they weathered the castings properly before machining them into engines.
